Name: Unsheathed Glory
Album: Beneath Sun & Soil
Released: 25 April 2025
I feel very fortunate that in recent years this music, dungeon synth, has flourished so much, because in the past it was difficult, at least for me, to discover albums I could listen to while reading books or stories of similar themes, sometimes fantasy settings and sometimes sci fi. Today the genre is so widespread that all you need to do is type the words into Google and endless lists appear before you.
The downside is that many rely on AI to compose for them, which is disheartening because it undermines the essence of creation. It turns the result into a patchwork of technical training with numerous borrowings, while true exploration is absent. Imagination is not used to shape a musical composition.
Someone might say that it has become so hard to identify this phenomenon, especially in music, so how can you be certain. Sometimes for me it is impossible, though at other times, when the credits are listed, you can piece things together. If you begin to doubt even those, then the discussion shifts elsewhere. Still, in the end, if you like what you hear, that is enough.
Beyond the approach I mentioned, that the music accompanies reading, it naturally stands on its own as well, because it has its own narrative. In the case of this album by Unsheathed Glory from Boston, these eight tracks present a journey, a descent into an ancient world where the protagonist gradually uncovers clues that lead to the discovery of a primordial civilization.
If the listener wishes, they can read the track titles and shape their own story, relying on the elements they are given and on these wonderful melodies that propel the imagination to run wild.
Beneath Sun & Soil is incredibly atmospheric, ideal to be paired with a warm drink and company, or enjoyed alone. It also suits a tabletop session. These days, with the temperature dropping, I believe it fits perfectly to try walking with it playing in your headphones, or driving somewhere with little traffic.
If you truly love music, do not rely solely on streaming.
Whenever your finances allow it, offer your support and purchase an album.
It matters.
